Writing
My article ‘Riotous Repetition’ in Tijdschrift Kunstlicht (vol. 44 no. 1, Failing on Time) proposes a formal relationship between extra-petalled flower mutations and slapstick comedy: a mutation of behaviour that isolates specific gestures and repeats them like a machine. These mutations may signal failure, however, within the restriction of repetition also lies freedom: a sense of infinity. To be stuck in a loop is to be liberated from function, imposed values, or other ideas of purpose. What follows is the conclusion that failure is not always what it seems, and looping may be an emancipatory movement.
The article is accompanied by illustrations I made using water colours, which are also featured on the journal's fold-out poster cover (collab. with designer Corine van der Wal, who used the illustrations in a riso-printer experiment).
